FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What medium and materials do you use?

All artworks are made with oil paints, most commonly on stretched cotton canvas. Some artworks in my series, The Gardens, combine oil paint with embroidery detailing on canvas.

I'm commonly asked what brushes I use. I always recommend the British-based brand, Rosemary and Co, with whom I am an affiliate. I appreciate that they offer a vegan range of beautiful quality brushes. Check out these wishlists I made of brushes I swear-by:

I've also made a video on how to properly clean your brushes here.

Oils are a slow-drying medium, and working in layers means even a small, simple piece can take weeks to complete as the layers must dry in between. I pride myself on attention-to-detail, meaning the creation of each piece is extremely time-intensive. My prices must reflect this. Know when you’re purchasing an original painting from me, it’s one made with 100% effort and heart.

Can I commission a piece of art?

Yes! While my capacity to take on commission work can vary depending on my work load, it’s something I love to offer! Please get in touch with any inquiries.

What is the commission process like?

  • Step One: sizes & pricing
    • I offer a range of sizes and prices for paintings on stretched canvas which come wired and ready to hang. Please email me with your vision and I can offer a quote. If I know where you're based, I can quote in your currency. However since I typically use PayPal or Wise for international orders, prices may be subject to their currency conversion rates.
  • Step Two: photos
    • I enjoy working from one clear, well-lit reference image. If you’re unsure, I’m more than happy to take a look at your options and help you decide which one would be most effective for the main reference image.
    • A picture with soft, natural lighting is ideal. For portraits, try to avoid harsh shadows and dim lighting. It is helpful if I’m able to clearly see the details in the eyes as well as direction of fur. That way, I’m able to achieve maximum accuracy and detail.
    • If you’d like a portrait featuring multiple animals, I’m able to use separate images of them, and arrange them together on the canvas
  • Step Three: booking & deposit
    • Please send an email to info@brittanydixonart.com with your chosen canvas size, your photos, a specific date you may need your painting by, and any further info (i.e. your pet’s name or breed, the occasion for your painting, any specific vision you have for the finished piece.)
    • Payment is taken in two installments; a 50% non-refundable deposit upon booking, and the remaining 50% once your painting is complete. The initial deposit will lock in your order. You will also be forwarded an Artist X Client agreement form to be signed.
    • Payments can be made via PayPal or Wise for international orders, or bank transfer Australia-wide.
    • Turnaround time varies. You will be provided a more accurate timeframe upon booking, however, please allow at least 4-5 weeks for the entire process. Oil is a slow-drying medium, so drying time needs to be taken into consideration.
    • You will be updated on your painting’s progress throughout its creation. This way, you can be certain you will be entirely happy with the outcome upon completion.
  • Step Four: completion & postage
    • Final payment is due upon completion. Meanwhile, your painting will take 2-3 weeks to dry.
    • The painting will then be varnished and prepared for shipping. Your piece will then be carefully and protectively packaged and mailed to you.
